Blocking Bitter, Earthy Ashwagandha with Ease

TastesNatural products block bitter tastes in ashwagandha and other neutraceuticals
Bites from the Bench™: Ashwagandha showed up on our bench, and our Food Scientists and culinary experts quickly masked the earthy taste at low usage rates.

Ashwagandha is a non-toxic herb that is showing up in food and beverage products, nutraceuticals, supplements, and more. The consideration of its adaptogenic effects can be reviewed in greater detail in this article from December 2019 authored by Salve, Pate, Debnath, and Langade, and published online by the National Library of Medicine. Specifically, ashwagandha’s stress-relieving effects, fertility and sexual health boost, and controlled levels of blood sugar are important to human health. We appreciate the claimed benefits of ashwagandha and are excited to aid our customers in using this ingredient in their products.

We are seeing ashwagandha being used in a variety of products and in a range of recipes promoting a sense of calm. Mixing ashwagandha with CBD as edibles has also become more popular, leading to a complex flavor profile induced by both main ingredients. After a series of lab tests, we masked ashwagandha powder’s bitter, earthy notes at low usage rates. We were also able to develop a successful formulation that masked both earthy-tasting ingredients when ashwagandha is mixed with CBD using TruClear™ and TruMask™. Lab tests were done using both ashwagandha extract and root powder.

Gummies as supplements and edibles are popular delivery methods and there has been some concern with the amount of sugar in those recipes. Fortunately, TruSugr™ sugar substitute adds sweetness without the aftertaste common with stevia and has been used successfully in sugar-free gummies.

Our Tru™ products are listed as a Natural Flavor, because they’re all-natural, non-GMO, and sustainable products. No filler, no fluff, all flavor.
